Do you often wonder, how did I get here ? Where did the time go ? Is it Thursday already ? Oh my, it’s Christmas again ?!

How many of us go through life on auto-pilot, going through the motions of day-to-day living ?

levels of consciousness

The diagram on the left shows the three Levels of Consciousness that we can experience during our waking state.

The Waking Sleep, describes us as being on auto-pilot. In this state we are able to function pretty well. We are able to accomplish many things, even complex activities … but there is generally little evidence in “being present” in this state of wakefulness.

Being Fully Awake, is all about being present. We are in full awareness of ourselves and where we are in time and space. We are fully aware of others and how we relate to them. We are fully aware of our surroundings and how we fit in. You can imagine the richness of experience when being in this level of consciousness.

To become Fully Awake is easy, even if you have a “hectic” lifestyle. All you need to do is switch on your senses … told you it was easy ! Lift up your head and open your eyes, become aware of sounds, the feeling of textures on your skin, the taste of food, the smells around you.

Higher Consciousness includes the fully awake state of being present, but takes it a step further to include the sense of unity, peace and stillness. Sounds a bit like something a dude with a long beard sitting in the lotus position can attain ? I am not convinced. I think many of us can get to this level of consciousness.

To attain Higher Consciousness, you need to be Fully Awake first … so switch on your senses. Then, the key is to be still. You do not have to rush off to a mountain to become still, you can find a quiet place (even in your office), close the door and for a few minutes become aware of your breathing and start to quieten your mind. When you get a feeling of peace (and maybe even unity with the universe) you have attained Higher Consciousness.

I hope that you will try some of these ideas out in your own lives. Notice what happens. Notice whether you have richer experiences by being Fully Awake and treasure those times of Higher Consciousness.

And, most of all, live your best life … every day.
